Prologue: (This is my take on the whole story of the game)

16th century feudal Japan.
For a time, it was an era of prosperity throughout the land. The people of the 16 provinces lived in happiness and peace. Then, a mysterious warlock with great magic appeared and promised the Emperor rewards of untold riches, power and the most prized of treasures...immortality. Blinded by his lust for more power and enticed by the thought of ruling forever, the greedy Emperor demanded the warlock grant that desire. So, the warlock, using dark and ancient magics, crafted a special armor that would make the Emperor invulnerable. The warlock also crafted an enchanted mask, that would grant the gift of immortality to whom ever wore it.

However, such powerful dark magic came at a terrible price. To sustain its magic, the power of the armor and mask began draining away the very life force of every living thing in the land. Famine, plagues, and natural disasters gripped the people and the skies above the land became blanketed in a heavy and corrosive darkness that seemed to be originating from the Emperor's domain in Edo...

But, much worse was to follow, as the underworld, attracted to the chaos, spat out demonic creatures and evil spirits who terrorized the land of the living. The land was slowly transforming into a realm of darkness and nightmares. The people in despair and the land in near ruins, all hope seemed lost...

Until, from the catastrophe, a lone master samurai of the Higo province named Hayato made a vow to banish the darkness and return light and peace back to his land. So, with sword in hand, he set out on his quest: To reclaim the five stolen sacred scrolls from the evil warlock lords and find the only weapon powerful enough to defeat both the Master Warlock and the Emperor....The fabled, "Sword of the Dragon Lord": a holy sword, rumored to contain the essence of Amenonuhoko (Heavenly Jeweled Spear).
