i've read about this before but i can't remember anything. in short, have them follow you until you can talk to them, then make them join
the easiest way is starting in rebirth and freeing slaves. you'll have several follow you like this and eventually you'll be able to talk with them. if they get thrown into a cage they'll try to escape and get to you. they'll stay by your side at all times until some point, i haven't tried that yet.
