Kerbal Space Program has updated, and now includes the beginnings of Career mode!

In career mode, you start out with only the most basic parts and you must do scientific observations to unlock additional parts. There is a new Research and Development complex in the space center that turn your science into new parts for your rockets.

Kerbals cam make observations and log them in the capsule computer and either broadcast them back to mission control (with some loss of data due to 'static'), can return the capsule to Kerbin and recover it for full data. Location matters, observations at different altitudes or over different types of terrain count as different science data. Repeat observations of the same data don't get you much (if any) additional science.

Kerbin and the Mun (and likely different planets and moons) have different biomes, such as shore, grasslands, deserts, etc. where you can make observations and even collect soil samples. Even the Mun had midlands and highlands (and probably lowlands, but my pass didn't take me over any).

After gathering enough science, you can unlock additional parts to build with, and some additional science equipment, including a 'goo container' and what looks to be a atmospheric sampler. You basically start off with one engine, one fuel tank, one booster, an antenna, a parachute, one girder, and the one man capsule. Everything else must be researched.
