Kerbal Space Program Mun Stack Challenge Attempt
I saw this challenge posted by Harv of the HOCgaming channel ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iB3yVSwxpE ) and I thought it would be fun to try it.
Little did I know that it would take me over 4 hours, and I didn't really complete it. Stacking Kerbals is hard! They keep sliding off of each other.

This turned out to be much harder than I thought it was going to be, and I made it even harder by wanting to bring the Kerbals back when we were done on the Mun. Also, making the crew car turned out to be more complex than I thought it was going to be. My initial design kept breaking the engine off when leaving the runway, and my attempt to fix that by adding another set of wheels to the back made it basically unsteerable once it left the runway.
I also had problems with the rocket, with my initial design coming apart after the first stage was dropped. I fixed that with more struts, but I also suspected that I didn't have enough fuel, so I ran a test launch (which was also a practice flight), and confirmed that this was the case. I then added an additional stage off-camera and tried again, but something bad happened during launch that cause 1/4 of the rocket to be left behind (apparently something broke during loading, severing that part of the ship). I did a bit more strengthening off camera, and also a test flight before making the final attempt.
The final attempt went well, except for two issues. I wasn't able to land on the sunny part of the Mun, and I didn't account for how much power those lights use (and left them on the whole flight to the Mun. This meant that shortly after landing on the Mun, the lights on the ship go out, and the Kerbals are left in the dark. (I also forgot that their suits had lights). I powered up the ship briefly to generate just a bit of power, so we won't have any issues when attempting to return, but I shut the ships lights off.
I then unsuccessfully attempt to stack the Kerbals on the ground, before getting them all on the ladder. I attempt to have them let go and stack that way, but the rag-doll when they let go, and don't stack. So I just have the all group up head to toe on the ladder in a stack. The rules (wait, there were rules?) don't say that the Kerbals can't be holding on to something. ;)
The flight back goes mostly well, but my one burn return attempt doesn't really work out, and I can't quite get the path to enter Kerbin's atmosphere, so I have to do a second burn once outside the Mun's sphere of influence. I do enter the atmoshpere, and then break the ship into it's three separate landing pods, each with 4 parachutes, which successfully land all 10 Kerbals!.
