QUOTES/NOTES/TOPICS:
• Steve Kerr after Warriors practice Saturday, on GP2: Gary Payton II (general illness) was back at practice today and in “good spirits”, on track to play in tomorrow's Game 4 against the Kings. (CJ Holmes, Dalton Johnson)
• On holding the Kings under 100 points: “great example of why the game has to connect… execute offensively and you rebound and you take care of the ball, it sets up your defense… a few possessions where we got lost in transition… rarely turned it over… forced them to play more halfcourt… they missed some threes… so did we… make or miss shots… take away the basics.”
• On if it’s fair to say Moody played better because he waited until the right moment: “the entire season was about development… he had a lot to work on… over the last six weeks of the season, in practices, in his individual work, in scrimmages with the younger players, he took a big step up. Now he’s being rewarded and he’s rewarding us, too… he’s earned this but that’s how it’s supposed to go… you just have to earn everything in this league… everybody league-wide is trying to sort through. If you’re a rebuilding team you can afford to throw your young guys out… (we are) trying to develop without playing much.”
• On why it works with the Warriors: “It’s an issue that everybody in the league has to figure out for themselves. What we’re seeing organizationally… put him in the G League his entire rookie year?… they’re gonna develop faster if they play 50 real games… with more and more players in the league coming in at 19… better and better synergy with G League teams… maybe drafting a player and just putting him in the G League all year… roster balance.”
• On Kuminga: “He eventually made some big plays at both ends… came out of the corner for a dunk… Outback dunk on a asteph miss… Monk, where he was draped all over him… it’s all development with these young guys… when the playoff come… everything is magnified… the tendency is to play young guys less… we’ll see how it plays out.”
• On Klay’s looks: ‘much better second half… first half we were all a little jumpy… Klay helped break the game open with his drive and kick… we need more of that.”
• On the guys having Draymond’s back: “wasn’t going to keep him from accomplishing what they wanted to do… JaMychal was really good. Donte… Moses… a lot of guys that really contributed but that’s what it takes in the playoffs.”
• On if it’s easier to continue momentum without Draymond: “regardless of what lineup is out there, we gotta take care of the ball… one of the best parts of Steph’s game… four or five possessions where nothing was there… impressive to see him control the game… all of our decision-makers on the ball, gotta be rock solid… can’t be like (first two games where they were wild).”
• On Steph: “breathing during timeouts, closing his eyes, focusing on… relaxing his body… really been helpful for him… first play of the series… throws the ball to Harrison Barnes for no apparent reason. That’s just focus… can sometimes cost him a possession or two… he just doesn’t think a whole lot… the other night he realized he had to think.”
• On if it’s about getting out of their own way: “my biggest challenge as a coach… when to step in and when to leave them alone because often times they play their best when I leave them alone… I don’t want to snap them out of it… on the other hand, take care of the damn ball.”
• On Kenny Atkinson: “Yeah, he doesn’t walk the line… you want both, that’s why you need different personalities on the staff… Mike Brown… fiery… Kenny’s been the same way this year… ultimately you want the guys relaxed but alert, on point.”
• On desperation combined with meticulousness: “Yes. We did it in Game 3 so we can do it in Game 4. They just proved it. So we gotta do it again if we wanna win the series.”
