While the Internet of Things is enabling people to have connected light bulbs which can change colour, and to quantify every aspect of their lives, it could also be involved in solving national, and even planetary-scale problems. The Internet of Things now means our electricity network is connected like never before.

What is possible when your generation can talk to your consumption, and vice versa? When intelligent devices can listen to signals from the grid and adjust their behaviour accordingly? When open standards for such communication means all these devices will be able to interoperate? What are the opportunities for developers in this new world?

In this talk, RedMonk analyst Tom Raftery will talk about how the Internet of Things and software development can help countries, utilities, and their customers work together to drastically slash the carbon impact of electricity generation and consumption.
