The Internet of Things has become a leading theme in conferences, books, academic and professional journals, university courses, research programs of companies, universities, applied research organizations and government-funded research programs, as well as reports on global future developments and industry analysis. Today, the relevance of IoT is crucial for many companies in the consumer world as well as in the business, with the need of flexible and highly customizable solutions to connect things to users and business opportunities.

In this context, we want to show a case study with a success story of IoT in the preservation of artistic heritage and structural safety in construction. In particular our focus will be on the gateway application development based on Eclipse Kura framework, describing how the latter can be used as fast OSGi development tool with particularly suited not only for prototyping but also to design complex and stable deployments.

Our solution is able to collect linear displacement and temperature data from a wireless sensor positioned transversely to a structural crack and process them in order to predict accidental subsidence and monitor progressive deterioration of ancient monuments. In this project we use IEEE 802.15.4 standard protocol for wireless data transmission between the crackmeters and the Kura gateway, collecting, in this way, multiple sensors data and performing a first elaboration on them directly into the gateway. Then, they are managed by the Solair IoT Cloud Platform (https://www.solaircorporate.com/) with an high level visualization of real-time and historical data and events and capabilities of fine-grained analysis on it to prevent damages and structural failures.
