Kill the Justice League: A Hell of a Good Time and the Death of Risk Taking in the AAA Space
Sort of a review, I do recommend KTJL as it's a really fun movement based looter shooter particularly in a 4 player co-op party. It looks great, it runs great, the voice acting and story are servicable and is a great take on the DC universe and upending the status quo of who are heroes.
However, I do think that the pre-launch perception of KTJL as well as the obnoxiously loud internet minority and the prevelance of sites such as Metacritic where ownership is not verified for user reviews and a huge discrepancy between what critics and the average gamer thinks. Once again, take a look at the user reviews where ownership is verified such as Steam, Xbox, or PSN and compare those user reviews to 'critics' and metacritic user reviews.
Now, some of this is on Rocksteady and WB Games. They provided game journalism websites and blogs with a 2 hour preview of the title, which famously involved IGNs 'the Flash is too fast' and had to tear off the NDA in an emergency for their alpha testers, who were overall positive on the game.
Anyways, this will be the death of risk taking in the AAA market. Developers and Publishers will push out more Madden, Fifa, and Call of Duty's than take any risks going forward because this is what happens. No matter what positive things people say of a game, the unwashed masses and 'journalists' will shape narratives.
Look forward to Spider-Man 3, where it's literally the same game as the prior 2 with 1/3 more characters to play through the same exact thing. Or why Madden and Call of Duty are as they are, any sort of change is grifted.
