“The son of the short-lived monarch of that country named Eahlmund r. 784-785 CE,” Egbert was likely born in Kent (Collins,196). The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles corroborate his Kentish ancestry, although new study claims he was originally from Wessex, casting doubt on this. Nothing is known about his boyhood save that he may have been related to Eahlmund and that he claimed to be descended from Cerdic (r. 519-540 CE), the founder and first king of Wessex.
