King Neptune's Adventure (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Color Dreams' 1990 unlicensed action game for the NES, King Neptune's Adventure.
An evil octopus has stolen eight treasures, including the almighty Orb of Peace, from King Neptune. From its Atlantean lair, the beast wields the power of the orb to control an army of regicidal sea creatures in an effort to prevent Neptune from reclaiming what's rightfully his. Annoyed (and apparently unbothered by his demotion), Great Value™ King Triton the fallen Roman god resolves to take back the seas and sets out on an adventure.
King Neptune's Adventure is an open-ended maguffin collecting action-adventure that crosses the structure of Captain Comic ( • Captain Comic: The Adventure (NES) Pl... ) with the gameplay of a shoot 'em up. Neptune can travel freely between the game's nine areas in search of the treasures, and the bulk of his quest is made up of hunting for keys, navigating mazes, and chucking lightning bolts at killer starfish.
The game sports a mildly interesting premise and some cool character designs, but as is the case with most Color Dreams games, King Neptune's Adventure is riddled with jank. The character movements and screen-scrolling are distractingly choppy, the collision detection is dodgy, the music is cheerfully depressing, the controls are fussy, you can only fire one projectile at a time, and though you're constantly being whacked by things you can't see, death is rarely a concern thanks to way the game showers you with health items.
It's not totally devoid of fun - I enjoyed my afternoon with it in spite of its problems - but unless you're specifically looking for the quintessential American NES bootleg experience, you'd be better off playing The Little Mermaid ( • The Little Mermaid (NES) Playthrough ) instead.
The box art is awesome, though!
