EA/Origin Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning. 48 hour Free Trial.

SYNOPSIS:
Episode One: Opening cinematic, character creation. Quest: Escape the pit of corpses. Find a way out.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
Amalur Reckoning looks promising. Slightly dark palette but seems to have interest features. Opening Cinematic gives a sketchy introduction to the world of Amalur featuring one of several possible protagonists available.

Good framerate, even with my aging AMD Radeon HD 7650M mobile GPU with 2GB dedicated VRAM.

CHARACTER SELECTION:
From the available races I chose Ljosalfar, "a proud and ancient people from the lands of the north. Ljosalfar judge themselves fit to divine right from wrong under wind, sun, and sky, and mete an even handed justice. Racial Bonuses: Alchemy +1, Sagecraft +1, Dispelling +2."

From the five Racial Bonuses of Earth, Air, Wisdom, Order, and Justice, I chose Order. (None give +1 XP.)

Mitharu, God of Order, grants Patron Bonus of +5% Health and +5% Mana.

These choices fit my moral consideration for Oldtjohn, whose appearance was generated by Preset 3. The Patron Bonuses seemed to be a good balance for the role I chose.

SETTNG THE SCENE:
After character creation, we find our character being carted away by two dwarf-like NPCs. It turns out that after recording some details about or character, the body is about to be dumped down some sort of hole to a tall pile of corpses.

Scene shifts to us awakening atop the corpse pile, the buzzing of clouds of flies assaulting our ears. Apparently we are not dead. :)

The first objective in a Main Quest: Escape from the pile and find our way out of wherever we are. Movement is the familiar old WASD keys, and camera view guided by the mouse. A minimap provide some navigation cues for short distances around our character.

I managed to get off the corpse pile, heading toward a beacon of light not far off. Unfortunately, I cannot view the source of the beacon since it is out of sight at the bottom of sheer cliffs at the edge of an otherwise featureless, barren plain.

GAME STOPPER ISSUE:
I find my way to a promising door in the distance. A corpse blocks the door handle but clutches a Rusty Sword. A tooltip shows Left Mouse button in red. However, L-Mouse does not take the essential sword. No help in Manual or setting for key-bindings other than WASD movement and mouse move to change view. Spacebar executes a character roll, but still no sword. :(

ESRB RATING:
Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning is ESRB Rated M, 17+ recommended. Age restricted video.
