I've loved the King's Quest series since I was a kid, without ever really getting to play it much.
King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder was a big deal back then, and whenever I got a chance to play it on someone else's computer, I'd give it a try. I never did get far.
At some point, I encountered King's Quest I and learned that the series was originally text-parser based. Somewhere around this same point, I encountered Mixed Up Mother Goose for the first time and spent a decade or so thinking that the first King's Quest was about helping fairy tale characters get their iconic items back.
When I was an adolescent, my buddy got King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow, which remains the only game in the series that I've ever beaten.
Then, finally, when I was a young adult living on my own, I played a point-and-click remake of the first game and never really got very far.
So, now, I'm starting the series from the start, going in not-quite-but-mostly-blind for three of the eight games. This first session sees me mapping the available area of Daventry, finding 38 points worth of items, and discovering to my horror that many obstacles can be cleared with multiple items (but surely are supposed to be cleared with *just the right item*).
Will the text-parser break me? Will I hit a million dead ends? Will I be reduced to begging the audience for friendly nudges?
There's only one way to find out!
