King's Quest III: To Heir is Human (PC) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A complete playthrough of Sierra On-line's 1986 text-based graphic adventure game, King's Quest III: To Heir is Human.
I played through this in its special Tandy 1000 mode, since the computer I originally played this on (a Tandy 1000TX that my dad bought in '88? '89?) had supported all of its features. The colors look the same as they do in EGA mode, but the sound is much nicer than the PC speaker - the Tandy's sound capabilities were pretty comparable to the Sega Master System's PSG sound, which is kind of neat.
Just for reference, the game required a 4 mhz 8086 with 256k of RAM, CGA 4-color (or Hercules monochrome) graphics adapter, and a standard density 5.25" disk drive. Stone wheels and chiseled tablets were recommended, but not entirely necessary.
It also supported hard drive installs. I remember that for the Tandy, we had a cavernous 10 megabyte hard drive in ours that my dad bought used for about $100, and to avoid having to buy the "hard card" interface adapter that went for close to $200, he soldered the leads straight to the motherboard. Good bye, obnoxious disk access slowdown and noise! Boy, things come a long way since the late 80s. Combined with the Tandy joystick, there wasn't a smoother way of playing the game!
While KQ3 never quite left the same mark on me as the first two games, I still really enjoyed it. It's quite a bit harder than the first two because of the timer and because of the super intense copy protection that required typing spells nearly verbatim from the instruction manual. At least no one individual puzzle is as irritatingly unfair as the Rumpelstiltskin one, and just about every puzzle does have a hint (if you can find it). The graphics and sound were great, and the shift to a darker tone for this installment kept it feeling pretty fresh. Highly recommended if you like adventures, King's Quest, or Roberta Williams' work.
I didn't do this playthrough with a solution by my side, so I ended up playing through it about 8 times before recording to make sure that I had everything lined up and wasn't screwing around everywhere. This game was HARD!
