Kitten Cannon is perhaps the first launch based flash game, where you try to send a kitten flying for as long as possible. Thankfully the kitten is invincible. I myself believe no harm comes to him :)

I can't think of any other launching based games earlier than this. There was the penguin launcher, but I think that came out after this. Anyway, there's no real strategy. You just have to be lucky to keep hitting all of the right stuff to keep going.
