With how much it’s taken the Internet by storm over the past year, it hardly seems necessary to say how incredible of a game Undertale is. It’s a great take on the classic RPG formula, as it subverts it in so many clever ways. Fast-paced, real-time battles, a mostly light and humorous tone, and some of the most fourth wall-breaking I’ve ever seen in a game – it’s all a very impressive package for a single independent developer.

Of particular note is the unique and well thought-out story that skillfully jumps between comedic and serious moments. For a game that begins so random and off-the-wall, everything comes together remarkably well, with a truly memorable ending (all 3 of them!).

This is especially true with the musical leitmotifs Toby Fox incorporates into the soundtrack. My favorite is “His Theme,” a little jingle first introduced in a clever music-based mini-game. It then plays a prominent part in the titular musical piece / huge climax of the story before finally being revealed as the theme of an important character. I included all 3 versions in this collection (though I rearranged their order a bit). Enjoy, and see you for the next 100!
