Klonoa (2008) Full Game Playthrough with Phantomille Voices - Wii on Wii U 60fps
After playing the Switch version with the stuttery inconsistent framerate and slippery controls, I wanted to replay the Wii version because I remember it being 60fps no drops and has much better controls, and it does. Now, on easy mode on the switch, the grab hitboxes are more forgiving and is exactly like the Wii version, so when I played it on normal, I was wondering why the grab attack was so short and inconsistent. That's probably how it was on the ps1 original. I'm curious if the slippery platforming and awkward momentum is how the PS1 version plays (I never played that version) is like, or if Namco messed up. The PS1 footage I saw is 60fps and has no stuttery-ness.
Would of been nice to include the PS1 original (and the Wii version would be cool to see in HD officially) for preservation sake in the hd collection. For 40 bucks (I paid 52 to import physical from UK), Namco did the bare minimum and they still cut corners (With the switch port, maybe ps4/5 & Xbox run 60fps no drops). There's no special feature or museum like galleries, just 2 games. Would of been nice to have a complete collection that includes the gba games & that beach volleyball spinoff, maybe that will come on a later collection. They charge 20 bucks for an art gallery and cosmetic costumes, which is ridiculous.
I mostly bought the HD Collection for Klonoa 2, since people scalp the ps2 copies and ps2 games look bad & blurry on an hd tv. On Switch, Klonoa 2 plays much better than 1, it controls great, it doesn't look like 60fps, it seems to be locked to 50fps or so (kinda like Neo Twewy Demo I played on Switch) but 50fps looks fine, it doesn't stutter or slow down like Klonoa 1 hd on switch does. looking at ps2 footage, ps2 is 60fps no drops and the cel shaded art style looks way better than the new graphics on Switch, so again, this is an inferior version.
When I was playing Klonoa 1 hd on normal mode on Switch, I didn't recall it being so difficult on Wii, and that's because it wasn't since the wii remake was made to be an easier game by giving you 5 hearts instead of 3 and the grab attack has much better range. The Wii controls so much better than the switch hd port of 1, no input lag, no slippery landings, jumping feels much better, no awkward momentum sliding, turns on a dime, etc.
I wish the Wii version had a harder mode to be more like the original, I feel like the HD port on Switch would be much better with controls like the wii version, but still had the difficulty of the original game, and ran at 60fps with no drops ( I did record at 59.94 fps, so there might be a 1 frame drop once in a while in the recording, but you shouldn't notice unless you do a frame by frame) just like the wii and ps1 version. With such simple graphics, the Switch should run this at 60fps no drop with no problems. If the Switch can't do 1080p60, namco could of just lowered the resolution, 900p60 or even 720p60 would be just fine with me. I would prefer a lower resolution if it meant better framerate. heck, even having an option to lock to 1080p30 or dynamic 1080p (or locked 900 or 720) with locked 60 would of been a great addition. The wii remake still looks fantastic at 480p.
I enjoyed replaying the Wii game, and it hold up incredibly well. I recorded on Wii U, and the Wii U adds a screen safe boarder I can't seem to get rid of, so I zoomed it in slightly in OBS. I don't think the screen safe boarders are there if I play on an actual Wii with composite cables, So I might have to test that one day (and I'll need to buy an adaptor if I plan to record that way in the future). The Wii remake has widescreen support, but doesn't seem to fill in 16:9 all the way, a lot of Wii games that support Widescreen are like that, and I'm not sure exactly why it is like that, but the black bars on the side are usually so small, I don't even notice.
