In this Mahalo video, Mahalo Chef Eric Crowley ‪demonstrates how to sharpen a knife with a manual sharpener.

Step 1: Choose a Good Sharpener
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Head to a kitchen supply store and compare different brands. Some stores will even let you handle the sharpeners to make sure it's a good fit for your needs. Manual knife sharpeners can range in price anywhere from $2 to $50. The brand that Chef Crowley uses in this video is MinoSharp.

Step 2: Prep the Sharpener
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Take off the plastic guard and fill the knife sharpener's well with water. This helps keep the blades cool as the friction produced during sharpening increases. Snap the plastic guard back on.

Step 3: Determine Your Sharpening Needs
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The sharpener has two different wheels set inside that are identifiable by color. The white wheel is very coarse for dull knives, while the pink wheel is finer for knives that aren't as dull.

Step 4: Sharpen the Knife
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Run the knife back and forth between the wheel(s). Do this about 15 to 20 times. There is no need to apply any downward pressure when doing so.
