Koudelka is a horror JRPG that will unmistakingly remind you of Resident Evil. If the dark atmosphere doesn't do it, the fixed camera angles certainly will! It's just that in Koudelka, zombies are few and far between (you fight a wide array of WTH-am-I-looking-at monsters), and battles take place on a grid and are turn-based.

I am playing the Japanese version here, but the voice acting is still in English. The story is interesting, but some parts of it bothered me. The characters' personalities also come straight out of the end of the 20th century: there's no way people in 1898 talked the way they do in this game (nor would she be wearing such a short skirt!). Otherwise, the game does a good job of bringing horror and suspense to the world it presents, and some parts of the game are definitely scary.

There are three different possible endings, and I showcase each one of them in the final part of the playthrough. The battles are a little slow, and it's often unclear where you have to go next, so a guide is definitely recommended to enjoy this game, but otherwise it's a lot of fun and the music is generally great. Interestingly, there are no quick saves in the Japanese version of the game, you can ONLY save at fountains. That feature was probably added for the international releases as a quality of life upgrade. Koudelka gave rise to the Shadow Hearts franchise, which are direct sequels (except for the third one).

I personally like the Japanese cover art more than the NA one, as it feels more eerie, in the spirit of the game. Overall, I'm really happy I played through it, and I can't wait to try Shadow Hearts!
