Castlevania - Part 1/3 - Nintendo 64 - 悪魔城ドラキュラ 黙示録 ~ Fancy Playing Castlevania in 3D?
Hey, look! It's another game in the franchise that's just called "Castlevania"! That's like... the fourth one if you count the Japanese titles! They could have at least called it Castlevania 64, like every other game on the Nintendo 64! At least the Japanese title is unique. More on that later.
This is the first time Castlevania is in 3D! And... it hasn't been well received, back in the day. At least, not as well as most games in the franchise that had been released so far. Camera angles are janky, making the platforming difficult. Controls are OK but not as tight as they are in most 2D games. And the banging hyped up music the franchise is known for gives way to ambient sounds and lots of silences.
But you know what else this creates? The most atmospheric Castlevania to date! Never have you played a Castlevania with such a sense of eerie exploration before. Discoveries, cut-scenes, and haunting music that will only play in some levels, making it just as memorable! Speaking of the music, did you know that Malus's violin intro song was first heard in the credits of Castlevania: Dracula X on the SNES? That blew my mind when I heard it after finishing Dracula X for the first time! I mention that at the beginning of part 1 and also during the credits of my Dracula X playthrough.
I really like this game. Despite the janky camera angles and controls, the game feels grand and its environments are chilling. Both characters, Reinhardt and Carrie, have three unique levels each and their own unique boss fights for some levels, making the game replayable. Dracula does have the weirdest final form we've seen so far, though! And in case you're wondering, yes this game has some unique features that are not found in Legacy of Darkness. For example, all of the original versions of the levels that have been redesigned in LoD can only be found here. And since some were so drastically changed, it's almost as if this original game had its own exclusive levels. I only missed out on one battle, the one that requires you to use many sun and moon cards, because it doesn't work if you're already in the Clock Tower!
The Japanese title, "Akumajou Dracula Mokushiroku", translates to, "Demon Castle Dracula Apocalypse". Castlevania Apocalypse would have been a great title!
