After defeating Ares and receiving the favor of the gods, Kratos asks Athena to erase the the nightmares that haunted him. Athena explains that the Gods only promised to forgive him for his sins; the nightmares unfortunately, would never be forgotten.
Feeling abandoned, Kratos climbs to the bluffs overlooking the Aegean Sea and tosses himself over the edge. However, as he breaks the waves below, he is saved by Athena. He has served the gods well, she explains, and that there is an empty throne awaiting him, the throne of the God of War.
