Since I discovered that Kerbol (the sun) has a sphere of influence and I found a way to fly through space at a fixed, unchanging, velocity, I thought I would combine that into trying to escape Kerbol's SOI. I was successful, but it kind of broke that save file. I think I better wait for KSP2 to get developed a bit further before I try this again.
