Today's music intro is the Yatsukahagi Battle Theme "Plague" from Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. Read on for comments from the music team.
This is the most complex piece in the Kunitsu-Gami soundtrack. It features difficult rhythms and an avant-garde jazz sound.
Composer Chikara Aoshima
This is a very complex piece, but the solo sections feature the musicians playing freely, which is something you don't often see in game music. The production process was challenging, but the recording was particularly difficult. When I suggested to Aoshima-san that we could overdub the solo (ad-lib) parts separately, he explained that since the solos are ad-lib-based, the content couldn't be finalized. Additionally, since the performances of Aoshima-san and the other musicians needed to adapt to the solo content, we decided to record everything as an ensemble. The guitar parts were also highly technical, and I remember struggling through them—but it was a memorable experience.
Music Director Ken Aseem Usami
Plague is a dynamic track with Avantgarde aesthetic and my approach is generally improvisational.
I’m trying to give the appropriate sound dramatics needed by striking metal objects, bells, wooden instruments, Asian cymbals etc
In the moments when the rhythm "locks" I participate in the groove by playing rhythmically with the metal objects and towards the end of the track I have more soloistic role and choose percussion instruments with natural skins.
Percussion Petros Tzekos
In the parts I contributed to, what really stood out was how the music, which I believe is closely synchronized with the scenes and game situations in the original composition and arrangement, was almost entirely recorded live. If you listen closely, you can almost hear the musicians' breathing and the raw energy of the performance. Beyond the immersive experience it provides for the game, I hope listeners can also feel the unique, surreal yet grounded atmosphere that exists alongside the game's world.
Bass Daigo Nakai
I guess my key points were the high energy, glitchy rawness and this feeling of never knowing what comes next. I remember the enemy was about something with many legs or so, right? That in mind, I think the energy reflects that, like having a boxing fight with three enemies at the same time :)
