This is my entry to the Level Up Challenge. I wanted to a list a few things that I feel I greatly improved on.
My mixing:
I’ve been doing guitar covers for less than a year. This is officially the 4th mix I’ve done. I’ve always been completely lost when it came to recording and mixing. I’m much more experienced in doing live performances and simply just jamming with friends. Thanks to quite a few tutorials and some amazing helpful people in the community, I think this is my best mix yet. I mainly focused on EQing everything and getting every instrument clear in the mix. This cover is going to compared to my Mega Man cover, because that is the last song that I mixed. I personally feel this is a huge step up.
My tones:
I’ve changed ALL my tones for this challenge. I felt that my tones in previous videos weren’t up to par. I tweaked things around and I really like my new sound. :)
My playing:
As a guitar player, there is always a tendency to fall back on the things you are good at and you shy away from the more difficult things. I’m good at the pentatonic scale and some basic sweep picking. I’m not good at figuring out dense songs by ear and fast alternate picking. I felt that this song quite intricate, but I managed to figure out each section. I also tried to fit in tons of fast alternate picking in the solo. It took a lot of practice, but I really like how I’ve improved my chops. :) (I also nailed the solo on the FIRST take!)
My arrangement:
As you may know, I try not to stick to simply just one genre. I really tried my best to get my style across. A lot of us in the community stay pretty true to metal, which is perfectly fine. However, I like to delve away from that and try out new styles and see if I can mix and match things. I think the result turned out pretty rad. :)
Feel free to comment and give me all the constructive criticism you have to offer. I challenge you all to tell me the references I made in my solo. :) Have a great day. I hope you levelled up! ;)
