33Aimed right at the Jeep Wrangler market, the Land Rover Defender launched in the North American market in 1993, labeled as the NAS. Initial production began 10 years earlier in 1983, it was tough to get into the American market due to strict safety regulations. From 1994 to 1995, Land Rover only offered the 90, a smaller 2 door version to its variant the 110, a 4 door version that was offered in 1993. The 90’s all featured a manual transmission and soft top. Like other vehicles featured on OCN Rigs, the Defender fell victim to being in a niche market and couldn’t keep up with the strict safety guidelines in the U.S. and the sales numbers did not warrant continued production. Land Rover opted to end their NAS sales in 1997. The value of these continues to skyrocket and there are still a decent amount of NAS Defender’s circulating on auctions sites all over the U.S. If you’re up for a challenge, you can always test the waters of importing from overseas as more of these hit the magical 25 year mark, making them exempt to DOT rules. Today we’re showing you a Defender 90 NAS owned by Chris Bird. He’s owned the rig for 11 years and patiently waited for the right one to come along to buy. He’s got it well sorted mechanically from a local shop here in Denver, and tastefully modified to make it even more capable off-road, but maintain the classic look. These rigs are getting harder to find and more expensive, but if you’re willing to be patient and open up your checkbook, you won’t be disappointed.
