One of the amazing achievements in the early space program was landing the Viking Spacecraft on Mars. We had no idea what was there, barely having imaged the surface, and yet we sent two spacecraft there in 1975 to study the landscape and test to see if life was on Mars. This was in part due to the Mariner 4, 6, 7, and 9 missions, as well as the Arecibo telescope, all of which contributed to us pulling off this fantastic mission. Let's talk about how their landing site was determined!
