Now that we’ve encountered Scotia pretending to be Dawn and driving her off, we actually could just go right back to Geron with the bad news. However, I decide to go ahead and backtrack to Dawn’s wagon anyway. It’s a bit of a hike, but there’s no time limit and the monsters we encounter along the way can give us some good fighting experience. With this in mind, I advance forward into Upper Opinwood and start moving through the forest maze. Since we’ve already completely explored Upper Opinwood, we have a full map of the area, which makes things fairly simple—I just head directly towards the Urbish Mines location and use the map as needed to keep my bearings. We manage to get most of the way there without incident, but near the Urbish Mines we’re attacked by a few Giant Hornets. They’re no problem at this point, so we simply dispatch them and continue into the Urbish Mines area. We’re not going inside the mines themselves, of course; we’re simply using the passage between Upper Opinwood and regular Opinwood. I quickly go through there into Opinwood, where we haven’t been in quite a while. The wagon where we found Dawn is still in its old spot on the map, and it’s just a matter of getting from Point A to Point B.

Following the map, I make my way towards the wagon. We encounter some Pentrogs en route, but at this point they’re not dangerous at all. We’re much stronger than before and have little trouble simply slicing through them. Soon enough we reach it, and it appears that Scotia was telling the truth in one respect—the wagon was indeed attacked and Dawn is missing. In a cutscene, we find the driver lying on the ground with a spear sticking out of his back, and when we try to ask about Dawn he dies before he can tell us anything. It’s a grim discovery, and now we can return to Geron with the full story—but there’s something else I want to do first. We’ve collected a lot of money from the stuff I’ve sold but haven’t spent that much. That’s because most of the things that can be bought at the standard merchants aren’t as good as our current gear, but there’s still the witch doctor in the Swamp selling Fireball Wands. My plan is to return there and buy as many of those wands as inventory space will allow to prepare for the endgame. With that much heavy artillery in reserve, I’m confident that the endgame should be fairly easy to manage even on Ferocious difficulty. I retrace our steps back to the southeast corner of Opinwood, killing a couple of Pentrogs along the way, and then go through some secret passages to reach the path to the Swamp. There are plenty of Orcs here, but they’re virtually no threat at this point and we go through them with ease despite their large numbers.

We cut our way through the Orcs and finally make it to the Swamp area. At this point, I stop to both rest—we’ve taken some light damage from the combat in Opinwood—and rearrange our inventory. I’m wanting to have all our Fireball Wands laid out in a row so they’re easy to grab, and so I take some time preparing our inventory accordingly. Once all the empty slots are arranged in a long row, I resume heading to the witch doctor and arrive fairly quickly. He’s still selling Fireball Wands at 300 crowns apiece, and with 4116 crowns in our coffers money really is no object. We’ve got nine open inventory slots, so I buy nine of the wands for a total of 2700 crowns. We’ve still got a decent amount of money, but this should be more than enough. With our massive arsenal purchased, I proceed to retrace our steps through the Swamp, Opinwood, the Urbish Mines, Upper Opinwood, and Yvel Woods to return to the City of Yvel. I make a brief detour to look in an already-open treasure chest to unfreeze Paulson’s face—it’s been frozen because of a glitch, and inspecting the chest breaks the glitch by making him comment on something—but beyond that we make good time and have little trouble returning to the city. Once we’re there I make our way back to Geron and the Council to tell them what we’ve found—but he doesn’t give us time. We’re told that Yvel is under assault and the city militia has fallen, so now we’re the last line of defense!
