Tally ho, homies! We're back once again with an obscure bullet hell game, and this time, it is none other...than Last Command! Developed by Dinaya and published by CreSpirit of Rabi-Ribi fame, it combines Snake and Danmaku with a slick retro aesthetic, technological theming, a cute girl, and one hell of an OST. Legit, this is absolutely the most excited I've been for an independent game release in an extremely long time. So I'm happy to share it with you all! ^^
Last Command operates on a simple system with various layers of depth to keep things interesting. The core mechanics are Python's - the Snake's - ability to Dash, Analyze, and Collect Data. It sounds complicated, but it's also surprisingly easy to learn once you realize that data is basically ammo and Analysis is the action of firing said ammo at the enemy. Upon shooting the enemy's Heart Core enough, you can dash into them to remove a layer of defense - also known as...well, damaging the boss. XD
There are also various modules which the player can choose to collect, and they come in two different flavors - Consumable Modules, and Passive Modules. Consumables cost SP, but can provide a variety of powerful effects, such as temporary invincibility or dropping a powerful bomb on the screen. Passives, on the other hand, grant powerful abilities such as decreased cooldown speed on your Dash (NOTE: INSANELY HELPFUL) or a magnet field that can catch Data from farther away (NOTE: INSANELY HELPFUL).
This challenge was sure a doozie. I already did No Damage and No Modules individually, but since I have absolutely no life to my name anymore, I figured I'd give this tough as nails category a shot! I did each part on my first try, except for...well, let's talk about that final Iron Guard a bit, hmm?
Iron Guard Lancelot is a lot of pain and somehow even more lances. Seriously, I even personally nicknamed his final phase "Lance Spam", and it never takes anybody longer than three seconds to catch on why that is. Lancelot's attacks are dense, fast, relatively unpredictable, and this is not to mention that there are many to worry about. His final two phases in particular involve these swirling spikeball maces, and combined with his other attacks, you'll be hyperventilating faster than a roadrunner can outspeed a coyote after it's been caught in a bear trap and cauterized from the waist down...Haven't made an analogy in a while! ^^
But I must digress. Last Command is insanely fun, unique, and creative! I am 100% of the opinion that anybody with even the slightest passing interest should not miss out on this gem. Last Command should be releasing very soon, and you can bet I'll be there to celebrate its launch! Godspeed, fellas.
PS: The Red Objects boss near the start is basically a glorified tutorial boss, and that EMP Blast I used is forced upon the player. You can see before the fight that even with that specific module turned completely off, you still need to use the EMP Blast at least once before the fight will move on. Oh well, what can ya do?
