"Last Rebellion" is the final game released by "Hit Maker" (not to be confused with Sega's "Hit Maker" or Sega AM3) and published by NIS (America) for the PS3 in 2010. If you've read up on this developer and seen my other videos covering their games, you probably came to the conclusion that they're just not very good at their craft, even if they were well-intentioned. Unfortunately, "Last Rebellion" does little to buck this trend or add a bright spot to their portfolio as it, almost bafflingly, repeats almost every dubious mistake of its previous three games but does so on an even lower budget than the titles that preceded it. Before I get into all of that though, let me at least offer a silver lining to this troubled development team that some may not have considered.

Hit Maker did not begin with "Blade Dancer: Lineage of Light"; they were actually founded significantly earlier in 1998 and also went by the name of "Hit Pit" but did not develop or publish games outright under their own label until years later, having a close working relationship with Nippon Ichi Software and almost serving as a subsidiary with funding coming from the company. Prior to BD, they helped produce various titles from Capcom's "Dino Crisis 3", "Biohazard Remake" (for GameCube) and Japanese Gameboy Color iteration of "Street Fighter Alpha" to Konami's "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty" to the popular "Shinseiki GPX Cyber Formula: Aratanaru Chousensha" (a series mainly released only in Japan except for the bastardized version known as "Cyberspin" in the U.S. for SNES). One could argue that the popularity (or notoriety) of their collaborations with Capcom are what ultimately pushed them to really put their name out there and pursue their true calling, RPGs (also putting their stamp on "Bumpy Trot: Vehicle Battle Tournament", no pun intended), but its president, Yukihiko Hojo, could not save the company. They were forced to declare bankruptcy in 2014 and the rest is history.

The game takes place in the world of Junovald which is governed by the will of two gods: Meitilia and Formival. Meitilia is the goddess of death, presiding over the destruction of life while Formival is the god of life, presiding over the birth of all life and the creation of everything. Meitilia is said to have blessed two types of people - Blades and Sealers - with special powers. Blades have the unparalleled power to destroy things physically while Sealers have the magical power to destroy souls. Two particular warriors, Nine and Aisha, form an unusual relationship early on that requires their two souls to inhabit one body as they go on a quest of hope and revenge while dealing with Formival's uncanny ability to regularly revive the dead that then terrorizes humankind.

LR was so critically panned in most circles that NIS America's president, Haru Akenaga, stated that the game was "not the kind of title we should release in the United States because of its quality", and that he felt "really sorry for our customers because we released that title". That's not to say there's NOTHING good about Last Rebellion, but... well... the game is extremely linear, short (can be cleared in less than 10hrs), and has all the hallmarks of a mid-tier PSP RPG that got pushed to console in the hopes of selling more units. There are no real towns or shops, almost no NPCs, almost no side quests, and a bunch of spells / items / equipment, most of which are useless. Essentially, the game is a "One-Vs-Many" turn-based RPG with little to offer outside of constant battles and an interesting premise that quickly wears thin. The player can strike multiple joints on enemies which unleash "combos" when struck in the correct order. Higher combos yield more experience and rewards and both characters are used in battle but share HP, MP and CP (used to perform actions) as well as status ailments (for example, if one character gets stunned, they both get stunned, etc.). The gimmick is to max out your combos to get ridiculously quick EXP and out-level the area you're in, which is good as every enemy needs to be beaten AND sealed and running from redundant combat is damn near impossible (and to add insult to injury, enemies eventually give zero experience... you CAN auto-seal enemies if you have a much higher level then them, but you won't know until you try).

Enemies are also "stamped" when struck, which then allows you to target them with offensive "Stamp Magic"... the benefit is supposed to be its low CP cost and ability to strike all enemies, but it quickly gets outweighed by the constant need to run up combos for EXP and melee deals more consistent damage. Lastly, there are "papers" that allow you to freely augment the level of your spells... support spells are RADICALLY broken in this manner and the game has a reverse-difficulty curve like basically all their games where it starts out difficult and becomes very easy before long.
