Description
Layers of Fear is a psychological and psychedelic adventure horror game, where you take on a role of a once renowned painter, who after a series of life tragedies is on a brink of succumbing to madness. After losing his prestige, wife and child, he only has one thing left – art. Finish the Magnum Opus and find out the true reason behind the artist’s motives. https://switchwatch.co.uk/layers-fear-nintendo-switch-review/

The game takes place in the first half of the 20th century in a Victorian mansion – the painter’s house. What at first looks like an ordinary building soon becomes filled with psychedelic visions and unexplained phenomena. Learn the protagonist’s story, by collecting meticulously crafted personal items while traversing the ever changing house. Succumb to his madness and see the world through his tormented eyes.

Layers of Fear is heavily inspired by masterpiece paintings from the past centuries, like the work of Goya, Bruegel, Rubens and the overall movement of the art of ugliness, which sums up to a truly unique and uncanny setting. Every item, part of décor and architecture has been meticulously crafted to heighten the feeling of immersion.

Layers of Fear is a Single Player game made in Unity 5 utilizing to the fullest the engine’s potential. A First Person Perspective makes the game more immersive and the dark and thick atmosphere will keep you on-edge for the reminder of the game.

History
During the work on another project an idea for Layers of Fear has emerged. We did a prototype and were more than satisfied with the results. Soon a team was formed to tackle this new game and month by month it grew bigger. Soon there was no doubt it moved from a side project to a full fledged game.

After many internal discussions we have decided to launch on Steam Early Access. We knew that it was a risky move, having a single player game and all, but we were also aware that horror is a very tricky genre, where one ill-made element can ruin the whole experience. It all payed off - the feedback we received, as well as constructive criticism and words of advice were very informative and had an impact on the production.

We have reached out to Microsoft and began work on the Xbox One version of the game. Layers of Fear has been added to the Game Preview program and launched on October 23rd on the Xbox Marketplace. A few months later, on January 20th we have unveiled that the game will also launch on Sony's PlayStation 4.

The initial release of Layers of Fear has brought the attention of possible publishers. We began talks with Austin-based Aspyr and soon the deal was sealed. It's a great pleasure to work with them, mostly because they immediately got what LoF was about and happily dived into the madness we have created (there's also the fact they are experienced professionals, but shhh, don't tell anyone that we have praised them :) ).

Layers of Fear during its Early Access/Game Preview period has received a few updates, most prominently the Halloween patch, which introduced a new room into the game where players could use a spirit board to summon a variety of effects. There was an in-game competition announced for Steam users to find all of the spawnable effects; the prize - an ingame portrait that would immortalise the winners in the final version of the game. We have chosen the three fastest people to find all of the effects: Master Doge, A Member of the 90s Generation, Grecia. The Halloween event has been closed after a month, however it may pop-up again in the years to come around Halloween.
