Le Mans 24 - Supermodel r735 (2018) Vs Supermodel v0.2 (2011)
Let's compare how much progress has been made in the emulation of Le Mans 24 using Supermodel emulator, comparing the most recent revision to the original official v.02 build from back in 2011.
I've been periodically uploading videos of Le Mans 24 running on the latest versions of Supermodel for the last few years, to show how the emulation has been steadily improving from the rather broken mess it started out as in the 1st version of Supermodel. In the last upload it was looking pretty good, but there were still some things that weren't quite right. Off the top of my head, I think there was no specular lighting (the lighting and shiny effects on the car), there was an issue with the transparency effect on the glass on the back of the F40 that covers the engine, where it would sort of disappear in places, and not all of the neon lighting type effects were working properly in nightime bit by the funfair.
I hadn't updated my version of Supermodel to try this game for awhile. A couple of days ago I had a message left on one of my old Le Mans videos from Ian Curtis, one of the Supermodel co-developers, suggesting I might want to try out the latest version...
Wowzers, all the above issues have been sorted now and I think the game might well be arcade perfect now. It's funny to think that back in 2011, when Supermodel was first released, I always used to think of Le Mans as the ugly duckling of the Model 3 racers, looking more like a Model 2 than a Model 3 game. But all the night to day and weather changes (now you can see them working properly) are pretty incredible for a late 90's arcade game and I now would easily but this on a par aesthetically with Scud Race, Daytona USA 2 and Sega Rally 2. Fantastic work Ian!
