Edit: In the video I said the beta would be over when I uploaded this, I decided to upload early so that isn't the case! You can still play!

I was recently invited to playtest a beta build of an upcoming FPS game on Playstation and PC called “LEAP”

I sort of bargained with the developers by tweeting them, saying that I’d give them access to my own game if they let me test theirs, and it worked.

LEAP is a fast paced multiplayer shooter that has a very battlestyle style large team gameplay, with up to 60 players per match on huge open environments. There are 2 teams, which are the UEDC, which stands for United Earth Defence Coalition, or the Rebel Exo-Terrans.

In game you have 4 classes or Exosuits, each come with a different loadout. These are Pathfinder, who is good for all round situations, and uses an assault rifle. Titan, who has a jetpack, and is heavily armored and has a minigun. Wraith which is the stealth class and comes with a sniper. And finally Tech-Ops which is the support and can heal teammates or drop turrets to defend a position.

At the start of a match you’ll deploy onto your vehicle, these range from hoverboards to a robotic moose, and depend on the Exo suit you have equipped. You’ll see 4 points named A,B,C and D on the map, these will start uncontested, and then throughout the match your job is to hold as many of the points as possible in order to score points. It works very similar to the domination gamemode from Call of Duty and Battlefield, or Strongholds from Halo.

Your points start at 600, and when they count down to 0, your team wins. At first I did find this a little jarring as I’m used to the score counting upwards, but you get used to it after a few matches and learning what you’re doing.

The movement potential in this game is insane, thanks to the grappling hook mechanic that we’re now all familiar with thanks to Halo Infinite and Apex Legends. The game actually doesn’t have a sprint feature, as the developers received player feedback that the base movement should be a sprinting speed so that we can essentially “Run and Gun” – However during the 5 hours that I played, it never really felt like the “Sprint speed” was fast enough, and all the momentum came from the grappling hook, or the hoverboard.

I think this game will do really well with players who play games such as Quake, Unreal Tournament, Lawbreakers, and Splitgate, along with some Halo players dipping their feet into it if Infinite wasn’t to their liking.

Currently there is not much controller support, and I’m terrible on mouse and keyboard compared to controller as I came from consoles as a kid, but this will be fixed in time and I’m sure the developers will work with the controller players to optimise the game for controllers in the near future.
