Mahalo expert Gene Shaw gives a tutorial on using the file menu in Photoshop.

File Menu Overview
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The File menu in Photoshop handles all of your importing and exporting. It is located in the upper left corner of you screen. The following overview will describe some of the most basic functions you will find within the File menu so you can familiarize yourself with them in-depth later.
The first option within the menu you will see is New. Click on New and it will prompt a new window with various options including: Default Photoshop Size, International Paper, Photo, Web, Mobile Devices, Film & Video and Custom.
Most of the time, all you will need in this window is the Web option. Here you will find various functions for customizing different image sizes such as: Width, Height, Resolution, Color Mode and Background Contents. Once you have modified your size options, clock OK in the upper right corner of the window.

Under New you will find Open. Within the Open window you will have your choice of different images to choose from within your entire hard-drive. To select one, just click on an image and it will open.

Browse in Bridge and Browse in Mini Bridge are both file browsing systems in which you can browse through the contents of your entire hard-drive, including: photos, documents, videos and audio files. Bridge will also give you some options to allow you to implement some initial editing to your photographs, without destroying the image or committing any of the changes.
Mini Bridge is a very useful new option within Photoshop CS 5. It's essentially Bridge but contained within Photoshop. It works in conjunction with Bridge as a file management program. You can double-click images here and they will open up in your workspace or you can click and drag images onto the canvas to do the same.

If your default settings aren't set to Open As Smart Object, you can choose this option from the File menu. Click on Open Recent (top 10 or 20 items you last worked on, to adjust this amount go to the Preferences menu).

These next items will require you to have an account activated with Adobe.com. Share Your Screen will allow you to share your screen with other users, Create New Review will allow you to review your projects, or set your projects up so that you may review them. Device Central will display any devices you have hooked up with your computer.

Close and Close All close individual or all projects currently open. Close and Go To Bridge does just that. Save and Save As will save an existing project or allow you to save it with a different name. Check In applies only if you are working with a team. Revert will allow you to go back one step to undo a mistake you made with your image.
Place allows you to open another image and place it anywhere within your current image that you want. Import allows you to bring in any Video Frames to Layers or Notes. Export allows you to move Paths to Illustrator, in addition you can also Render Video (especially useful if you are animating).

Automate allows you to
Batch Automate. The Watermark option at the top of the Batch window allows you to take several images and apply the same action to them all simultaneously. Create a Droplet is basically Batch Conversion but you don't have to open Photoshop.
Scripts has some useful features, such as Delete All Empty Layers, Flatten All Layer Effects and Flatten All Masks among others. Each one of these actions will take place within your entire composition so you won't have to go through each of your layers manually.
File Info is your meta-data, which you can change if needed. Finally, there is Print and Print One Copy which do exactly as they say. These are the most basic functions of the File Menu, which will now allow you to explore more of Photoshop's cutting-edge features.
