Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth tells you about the cytoskeleton in cell structure.

Cytoskeleton
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The cytoskeleton is a network of fibers running throughout the cytoplasm of a cell. It helps the cell maintain its shape and gives it structural rigidity. It contains several types of fibers made from different proteins, and is found in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.c

Filaments
---------------------------------------------------------------------

In eukaryotic cells, there are three mains types of filaments: microfilaments, intermediate filaments and microtubules. Microfilaments, the thinnest of the three, and intermediate filaments are like tension-bearing cables stretching across the cytoplasm, helping to maintain cellular shape. Microtubules are straight, hollow support beams of the cell that help guide the movement of organelles and chromosomes.c
