When installing, make sure to select the correct operating system. Open the downloaded file and follow the installer.
JDK Download (Java Development Kit), this includes JRE (Java Runtime Environment), so you don't have to install Java separately.

After that, you are going to be needing an extension. Search for "Java" in the extensions menu, and you should find an extension that makes VSCode able to run Java applications.
