Taking a hill is important, sure. But when the enemy has enough men to completely encircle that hill and outnumbers you on all fronts, getting around the sides and harrying the larger force may be a smarter option as opposed to getting surrounded.

I really like the way night battles look in total war, though sometimes it's a bit hard to see how things are going. Shogun had some really interesting night battles due to the amount of artillery that you could take which looked pretty good, I may want to try taking something similar in this playthrough though there aren't many things that have a similar effect.
