Inspired by the ingenious engineers at Chrysler Corporation all those years ago...here it is...a true and functional fluid drive coupling made out of LEGO. Well, mostly LEGO...

The design is frighteningly simple: two bottle caps (prototype version only) bonded together, with three LEGO Technic pulley wheels arranged inside the coupling on the input and output shafts. The casing is then filled with oil, and there you have it!

I am using 40 weight oil for this video. I have not yet experimented with lighter or heavier oil on the test bed, however I have read that lighter oil may well transfer torque better and reduce drag.

This unit will hopefully one day soon see the light of day (or the light of the ground ;) in a LEGO Routemaster Bus of my own design. Here's hoping! Here's the proof of concept on the test bed in the meantime...
