I'm reviewing 2018 LEGO Year of the Dog, a promotional LEGO set and current LEGO store giveaway with purchase. This cute LEGO set features 156 piece dog with decorative base and celebrates 2018 - the year of the dog which began on Chinese New Year in February.
LEGO's Chinese New Year 40235 set also includes a very nicely printed envelope with 2018 embossed in gold and a silhouette of the dog embossed in gold on the reverse. The envelope is red inside which, according to Chinese culture, symbolizes good fortune and wards off evil spirits. It's a cool addition to this Chinese New Year promotional LEGO set and it's always interesting to learn about other cultural traditions.
LEGO's year of the dog build is a very attractive and well-designed dog. It uses the 2x2 round tile elements for eyes which were commonly used in Mixels and some LEGO Creator sets. They give the LEGO year of the dog build a goofy but charming look. The base on which the dog sits is decorated with green foliage, red LEGO flowers and red and gold detail, again symbolizing good fortune. The LEGO dog build is posed sitting on all fours and comes with posable head, ears and tail. The tail is especially poseable thanks to three points of articulation in the shape of LEGO ball joints.
40235 Year of the Dog is a promotional giveaway set at The LEGO Store until February 28th 2018 or while stocks last. Minimum spend on LEGO products is $88 in the United States which is a culturally significant number. 88 symbolizes fortune and good luck in Chinese culture as the word 8 sounds similar to the word fā (发, which implies 发财, or wealth, in Mandarin or Cantonese). 8 is considered to be the luckiest number in Chinese culture, and prices in Chinese supermarkets often contain many 8s.
