Three months back we unboxed the Legion 5 powered by Ryzen 5 4600H processor. Today, we have the new Legion 5 Pro to unbox. It comes with offers top-notch specs including the Quad HD+ display with 165Hz refresh rate, latest Ryzen 7 5800H processor, and NVIDIA RTX 3070 mobile GPU. There is also a slightly lower variant with the NVIDIA RTX 3060 mobile GPU. In this video, you will see us trying out different games and their respective FPS.
Opening up the package we have a laptop, power cord, 300W adapter, user manuals
First impressions - With the aluminum chassis, the build quality feels solid. It is also bulky just like other gaming laptops and you won't notice any creaking or flex. It weighs 2.45 kg and measures 26.85 mm thickness at its thickest point. The Legion logo on the lid also illuminates. While it looks cool, the logo keeps on pulsating even after the lid is closed and the laptop is in sleep mode.
Tip: you can turn the illuminating logo on or off by pressing Fn (Function) + L.
Coming to the ports
Left - USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 & 3.5mm audio jack
Right - USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, Camera On/Off switch
Rear - Ethernet, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, 3 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI, Power Input
The SD card is missing if you care about it. Inside you get a full-sized keyboard and a pretty large trackpad.
Talking about the display - it is a 16 inches Quad HD+ IPS panel with 16:10 aspect ratio and 165Hz refresh rate. It is not just large but also taller than a regular 16:9 display. Also, the bezels are thin on all four sides. With 500 nits max brightness, the display also looks bright and crisp.
G-Sync Compatible
It is also compatible with watching content in Dolby Vision and VESA DisplayHDR 400 high dynamic range. The anti-glare finish does a great job of reducing reflections.
The display is also compatible with Nvidia G-Sync for a better gaming experience.
You can also get a 3ms response time by enabling the Overdrive option in Lenovo Vantage. It is one of the best displays we have seen on a laptop.
You can also switch between 165Hz and 60Hz refresh rates by pressing Fn (Function) + R
The variant we have comes packed with Ryzen 7 5800H processor featuring 8 cores and 16 threads
The 8GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX3070 mobile GPU comes with a maximum TGP of 140W. You should be able to play a majority of the games at high settings without any issue.
32GB LPDDR4 RAM, 1TB NVME M.2 SSD.
There are two slots each for RAM and SSD and both are replaceable.
There are dual fans and a large heatsink to help dissipate the heat and prevent performance throttling.
The laptop packs an 80Whr battery which is a decent size for a gaming laptop. We got around 6 hours of battery life while watching Netflix and browsing the internet. For gaming, it lasts less than an hour even with 50% brightness and a 60fps refresh rate. It supports Rapid Charge Pro which charges up to 50% in just 30min.
Also, the 300W power adapter is quite large to carry around
You get a 720p Webcam which is decent. The electronic kill switch is an added advantage. However, I still prefer a physical cover.
There are two 2W speakers and dual-array microphones
The RGB backlit keyboard comes with four-zone RGB lighting. The key travel is decent and they are very quiet which is an added advantage. While there is a number pad, the number keys are slightly smaller than the rest.
Coming to the trackpad, Lenovo should have opted for glass trackpads instead of a plastic trackpad.
Geekbench - 1,424 on single-core and 7,269 on multi-core
Cinebench - 1,386 on single-core and 12,541 on multi-core
No Windows Hello support for face unlock or fingerprint scanner
Big charger to carry
Less power efficient when using it on the go
For wireless connectivity, it offers Wi-Fi 6 & Bluetooth 5.1
The Legion 5 Pro offers a lot of power and also looks stylish. The 165 refresh rate and RTX3070 mobile GPU will surely help increase the quality of the gaming experience. While the battery life is not that great, the Legion 5 Pro is surely one of the best gaming laptops in this price range. You can experience the best performance when it is connected to a power supply.
