The forest is still dangerous, but a well timed Ray (aka asap) will kill the witches before they can get off any starlights. If you want to do any grinding here, its generally best to go until you at least get Head Splitter. How much more you want to do depends on what you're specifically going for. A bit of a common approach is to level here til about 15 and then hit up the mountains west of cross til 20+ and maybe you'll get a Walloon sword from the sword guys around there. I uh, won't need to worry about getting one of those now.
