I really like the fact that the gnomes of this setting are not just the goofy tinkerer mad scientists that you see from Dungeons and Dragons ever since Dragonlance was a thing. That trope is present, but even then most of the gnome researchers are far more serious and focused than they are the goofy absent-minded professor types. Hughes is the closest to that trope and he's still far more observant and serious than your average gnome. And then you have the gnome praetorians. They aren't just a single-hat culture like so many fantasy races. It's great!
