High on Life is a comedic sci-fi Metroidvania[1] first-person shooter game created by Justin Roiland and developed and published by Squanch Games.[2] It takes place in a science fiction world and features talking guns. The game includes voice acting from Justin Roiland, J.B. Smoove, Tim Robinson, Tom Kenny, Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack.[3] It was released on December 12, 2022 at 7:00pm, for Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S at a price of $60.[4] It will be available on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service starting on the release day.[5]
Taking place in the future, humans have been captured by a malicious alien cartel known as the G3 Cartel led by Garmantuous to be used as drugs. Playing the role as a bounty hunter, the player must navigate throughout the galaxy to save the humanity by using weapons called Galatians, used to take out the threats.
High on Life is a Metroidvania first-person shooter video game. The player has access to four distinct guns and a knife, and they can purchase additional movement abilities, such as a dash and a forward slide in the in-game store. The guns in the game are sentient. Roiland voiced the pistol Kenny; JB Smoove voiced the shotgun Gus; Betsy Sodaro plays Sweezy; Tim Robinson plays Creature. The game has also been confirmed to be exclusively single-player.[6]
The original High On Life trailer was released at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on June 12, 2022 with an anticipated release of October 2022.[7] A two-month delay was announced on August 18, 2022 however that set the release date to December 13, 2022 with the stated reason being to finish improving the game.[8]
Justin Roiland, is said to be heavily involved in the creation of High on Life.[9] He has received credit for creating the original concept of the game and taking part in the design and development of it.[9] Design director Erich Mayr has described the style of the game to be "Blade Runner meets The Muppets."[10]
High on Life has "generally favorable reviews" based on 6 reviews, according to Metacritic.[11]
