I was trying to decide between playing a new game or an old game, then came up with an idea - why not both?
This is Caster of Magic, DLC that was released back in February of 2020 for the game Master of Magic, which was released back in 1994.

Yes, that's DLC for a game 26 years older than the DLC. Slitherine Limited took up a mod and eventually just bought the rights to Master of Magic so they can release both at the same time. It is available on GOG and Steam, and I definitely recommend the base Master of Magic (with community patches to make it less buggy than Daggerfall).

Master of Magic is the progenitor of the entire Fantasy 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) genre of turn-based strategy games, based on Civilization (same original publisher, in fact) and Magic: The Gathering, strangely enough. The MTG bits are mostly just flavor.
In this game, you are a wizard attempting to conquer the world through combat or through magic (via the Spell of Mastery, mentioned in the really craptacular opening). This corresponds with Civilization's victory conditions of Conquest or a space ship to Alpha Centauri.

This 4X game is using the same engine as Master of Orion and, in fact, is developed by the same people. Think of this as "Master of Orion 1.5" if you will. It is one of my favorite games and one of those that I continually return to over the years, even if the game at v1.0 (what I primarily played) was a horrible bug-filled hilarious disaster of a game, where you could step into memory at will to get some really strange effects, like leveling from the level "Champion" to the level "Vampiric". YUP.

The DLC though? Well, this is the first time I'm playing, so let's find out together. This is going to be a bit different, as I'm going to have several runs through the game... mostly as I fail and figure out mechanics. This video itself is more of an introduction and explanation, along with character selection for my first run. Zero gameplay in this video - that's for the next one.
