Colony Wars 2492 is a real-time strategy game developed by Digital X-citement, first published by Black Legend in 1996, and distributed by Leisuresoft Group. Despite having a British publisher, the game was only ever released in Europe's German-speaking areas.
The game, which is not part of Psygnosis's Colony Wars series, takes place on the resource moon Ansgar-15 in the year 2492. The robots on the plant have gone rogue, and a team of scientists is sent there to restore order and prevent the conflict from spilling over to Earth.
Colony Wars 2492 features no base building, but allows player to capture structures pre-placed on the map. Robots are produced in headquarters, and their parts in various factories. The factories in turn are supplied from mines where Angarium, a new element, is mined.
Robots are assembled from three parts: chassis, weapon, and special parts. The chassis determines how fast a robots moves on various terrain types, and whether it special properties, such as immunity to mines or the ability to clear terrain. Special parts can improve a robot's firepower, allow it to transport parts or resources, build barriers, and more.
Colony Wars 2492 has a 16-mission singleplayer campaign, but no multiplayer mode. The game received mixed reviews, with critics lauding the custom units, but criticising the game's pace and controls. Digital X-citement would release a sequel to the game, Akte Europe ("The Europe File") in 1997.
