Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War is a real-time strategy game developed by Stainless Steel Studios and, after their closure, Midway Games San Diego, and published primarily by Midway Games. It was first released for Windows on June 12, 2006.
Stainless Steel Studios had previously developed Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War differs from its predecessors in a number of ways. The game focusses exclusively on classical antiquity, with playable civilisations being Greece, Persia, Egypt, and Rome.
Two resources, lumber and gold, are harvestable in the field, whereas a third one, glory, is gained by actions such as building and fighting. Heroes also receive a prominent role: they can be levelled up, take advisors to boost a faction in various ways, and be controlled in a third-person mode. This mode allows players to enhance their hero's combat abilities, boost the spirit of their troops, and earn titles by slaying their foes.
Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War comes with multiplayer support as well as two singleplayer campaigns in which players take the role of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. The game received mixed reviews, with critics generally praising Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War's ideas while being less impress with their execution as well as the game's lack of polish.
