Command & Conquer Generals is the first main entry in the Command & Conquer series that's not part of the Tiberium or the Red Alert universe. Instead, it takes place in the near future against the background of a global conflict between the United States and the People's Republic of China on one side, and the Global Liberation Army - the world's largest and most generic terrorist organisation - on the other side. It takes places primarily in Central Asia. Considering the political climate at the time, it is remarkable that Command & Conquer Generals was ever released.
