Cuphead is a strange game that exists in a very special place in my heart. A place that I absolutely hate and wish wasn’t there, but that I can’t help but keep coming back to over and over again to make myself suffer. It’s like an addiction combined with a really abusive and coercive relationship. It was fun once, but now all it does is hurt me, I can’t seem to leave, and even when it’s rewarding it barely takes the edge off these days.

However, I still think it’s a masterpiece of visual design and flair and is a beautiful and faithful modern day recreation of the animated style of the 1930’s to which all modern cartoons can trace back their lineage. Nearly ended a sentence on a preposition there, and that would not be proper for a 1930’s gentleman. No, no.

It’s also a proper indie “heart and soul . . . and life savings” project with MDHR Studios putting all their personal money into it and facing bankruptcy in the days leading up to release. However the game sold well and I believe their hard work has paid off and the game moved over 2 million copies. Hopefully the devs have been able to cover that second mortgage they took out.

Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.
