Let's Play D&D: The Temple of Elemental Evil • 70 • The Balor
No more kicking the can: it's time to fight the balor guarding the Fire Node. The first seven minutes of the video are of me buffing and wringing my hands about the upcoming fight, so maybe you wanna skip to 7:00 if you're not into that.
I must admit that this went much better than I thought it would. I practiced off-screen for a few hours prior to all this so I could learn the fight and how best to approach it, but the game seems to have thrown me a bone (or two, or three) which made all the difference in the world. Sure, I'm embarrassed about Gorduk running in there to punch the guy to death, and it wasn't great when Relana got completely surrounded by the summoned quasits, but we handled it all very well and came out on top. Relana blasting her way out of that and Kalis working together with the summoned dire bear to control the little jerks was great, and seeing Relana one-shot both efreetis with Disintegrate was just glorious. And keep in mind, rather than summoning quasits, the balor could have instead summoned a vrock, a glabrezu, a hezrou, or another balor. I've even seen the guy summon THREE hezrous, which to me is just plain cruel. Because they stink. And I can't believe I'm going to say this, but thanks for casting Slay Living on Gorduk, ya dumb balor! That fatal mistake is what gave the party the edge it needed to claim victory. There's no stopping Gorduk on a rampage!
I think it's important to keep in mind that even though Gorduk ultimately brought the balor down with utterly terrifying amounts of damage, you can easily see each party member's contributions were critical for success. Without the right combination of damage, buffs, heals, tanking, distractions, and supporting firepower, even an absolute beast like Gorduk is going to find himself in trouble. Yay for the party!
