Dark Reign: Rise of the Shadowhand is an expansion pack for Dark Reign: The Future of War. Like the base game, it was developed by Auran and published by Activision. Rise of the Shadowhand was first released on March 26, 1998 for Windows.
The expansion adds two new subfactions: the Shadowhand, a secretive organisation within the Imperium, and the Xenites, an alliance between the Freedom Guard and a Freedom Guard offshot that has learned to tame the wild creatures of their native planet. Both factions share about half their arsenal with their parent factions, with the other half being new tech, and each gets a seven-mission campaign.
Dark Reign: Rise of the Shadowhand takes places after the end of Dark Reign: The Future of War and the re-emergence of the Togran Foundation. A Shadowhand ship a number of Freedom Guard units get stuck on a planet only connected to the rest of the known universe through a Fold Gate. The Freedom Guard has to strike an alliance with the beast-taming locals, whereas the Shadowhand needs to bring Osiris, a rogue combat AI, back under their control.
The expansion got positive reviews, with critics praising the scope of the expansion, the campaign missions, as well as the improved map and mission editor.
