Let's Play Darkest Dungeon Gameplay - Part 15 - Starving in the Dark
3Darkest Dungeon is a turn-based roguelike dungeon crawler game produced by indie development team Red Hook Studios. The game follows the story of an estate manned by a rich older man, who becomes bored with a lavish life of luxury, and starts to investigate myths surrounding the manor. He spends the last remaining vestiges of the family wealth on workmen, who slave endlessly and finally uncover a portal, a door to another world. Horrors are uncovered and the man is the only one who escapes alive, and he writes to the Player, his relative. He entreats the player to come to the mansion to investigate the horrors and "reclaim your birthright," before ending his own life by gunshot.
Darkest Dungeon saw an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign and has received early praise from Let's Players and the media. The game features a unique, hand-drawn "gothic crowquill" art style, as well as some fairly unique mechanics. First and foremost among these would be the Stress system in the game, in which Heroes are treated more as humans than supernatural warriors, and the effects of fighting many warriors and beasts take a toll on the adventurers. Not only does the game feature permadeath and thus a very unforgiving penalty for mistakes, but characters can develop phobias and afflictions along the way as a result of stress. Conversely, heroes can also react positively to the affects of stress, rallying in the throes of battle. Their proclivities and aversions are procedurally generated, and the events in each battle are subject to random number generation (RNG) as well, making each trawl through the dungeon unique and interesting.
