We continue the story in Dragon Quest 2 and I get in over my head talking about history I don't remember perfectly on the internet. Here is a brief summary of Charlemagne's Empire after his death. Charlemagne only had Louis the Pious as a successor despite his having 18 children (not all legitimate). It was Louis' children who split the empire for inheritance when he died. That is what I was thinking of when I said the kingdom Roto established was split between his three children and made into smaller kingdoms.
